Last fall while riding my bike near my house I discovered a large apple tree on the side of the road near a farm. The first thing I noticed about this tree was the almost neon-florescent color of the apples. It was when I bit into one that I realized I had a real treasure on my hands. The texture and flavor was exceptional. I don't think it’s an exaggeration to compare the texture with honey crisp. It’s exceeding juicy, crunchy, with an intense sweet-tart flavor. The flesh is the same color as the outside of the apple, very peach like. The tree itself is huge, probably two feet in diameter and 45 feet tall. The leaves are the biggest leaves I have ever seen on any apple tree. The apples hang in huge clusters looking very much like grapes, I would like to believe that with pruning and thinning the size would increase.
The road that the tree is on is dotted with many apple trees both cultivated and wild. The extreme features of this tree lend themselves to an easy identification. If you recognize it as a known cultivar please contact me. Thank you!
